Location: Near Dogubayazit (1850 m)      by: Wolfgang Schmähling
Area: Turkey      Date: 20.8.2014
The highest mountain of Turkey with 5137m, situated almost at the Armenian and Iranian borders, towers impressively over the East Anatolian highlands. It is not surprising, that it became the source of biblical myth and a holy mountain for Armenians and Kurds.
The ascend is long and arduous, as 3000m of altitude difference have to be covered, but technically it is very easy. There are two camps at 3300 m and 4200 m which provide rest and acclimatisation to the hikers. Most groups reach the top in three days, only the last 200m across a very flat glacier.
However, our guide expected a weather change to the worst and convinced my two Spanish companions and me to try faster.
We managed to reach the top within 21 hours with only a sleeping break at the second camp. Our guide got sick on the last bit, but the three of us were still in pretty good shape.
Unfortunately it was quite hazy at the peak, no panorama possible, but it still was a fantastic experience.

Dear Wolfgang
Congratulations for reaching the top of this very special mountain and thank you for this beautiful view. I have been there (and visited Ishak Pasha Palace) but was not so lucky to see this beautiful volcano.
Regarding the permit: I guess you can get it locally or do you have to apply from back home?
Herzlichst Christoph

Christoph, according to my travel agent getting the permit takes at least one week, so better apply from home.
