As Dieter wrote, I am standing on the exact spot where, according to legend, Saint Peter landed on his journey to Rome. There was an ancient pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva here, and Saint Peter is said to have converted the population to Christianity, abandoning the cult of the goddess Minerva.
This is a legend, and there is no historical confirmation. What is certain, however, is that there was indeed a temple dedicated to Minerva on this spot.
Now there is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae.
"De finibus terrae" is a Latin phrase meaning that the Earth ends here. Of course, the Earth doesn't end here, but this is where the populations who were defined as Roman citizens ended.
Another point of interest about this place is that the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet here. Some say you can see the meeting of the two seas with a dividing line, but I haven't seen anything and I'm convinced this isn't true.
Legends aside, the place is still very beautiful and interesting.
