A place that does have many hills, where streets aren't flat, aren't straight and not set up in a rectangular pattern.
Quite possibly, as transportation and communication around the world has gotten 'better and easier', this place is no longer as important as it once was. Owing to its location as the eastern most point of North America, Newfoundland and it's capital St. John's has played an important role in history. Explorer Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) may have first landed here in North American soil in 1497 (although Cape Breton in nearby Nova Scotia is making the same claim.) In the past 125 years, St. John's was also the site of the first transatlantic telecom signal (Marconi), first transatlantic flight, most famous transatlantic cruise ship desaster (Titanic) and more recently Titan submarine misadventure. Politically it Newfoundland a British dominion and became a Canadian Province only after World War II. The island is very scenic and rich in landscapes, seascapes and villages of stunning beauty. It is not known for particularly attractive weather.... Last but not least, Newfoundlanders are famouso for being the friendliest Canadians! |
