Am Flughafen in Faro hatte mich bei Ankunft in der angeblich so sonnigen Algarve gleich ein kräftiger Regenguss (es sollte nicht der letzte dieser Woche bleiben) in Empfang genommen. Also war ich direkt nach Tavira gefahren und hatte mein Zimmer bezogen, um dann bei nachlassendem Niederschlag die schöne Stadt zu besichtigen. Am späteren Nachmittag zeigte sich dann auch noch etwas die Sonne, und ich fuhr ein paar Kilometer nach Westen hinaus und gönnte mir noch einen großen Strandspaziergang vor Sonnenuntergang.

Während die Westalgarve (Barlavento) für ihre Felsküste und Buchten berühmt ist, dominiert östlich von Faro (Sotavento) eine breite vorgelagerte Sandbank / Nehrung den Küstenverlauf.

On arrival in the supposedly sunny Algarve, I was greeted by a heavy downpour at Faro airport (it was not to be the last one this week). So I drove directly to Tavira and checked into my room, then went to visit the beautiful town as the rain eased off. Later in the afternoon, the sun showed itself a little and I drove a few kilometres west and treated myself to a long walk on the beach before sunset.

While the western Algarve (Barlavento) is famous for its rocky coast and bays, east of Faro (Sotavento) a wide offshore sandbank / spit dominates the coastline.
