Agiofarago, the «Holy Gorge», because it lies on the territory of the Odigitria Monastery (see N.16118). From the end of a gravel road you walk for 20 min inside the gorge to a wonderful, isolated beach. Few hundreds of meter before, the church of Agios Antonios greets you along the path. Close to the church lies a well, which supplies the only water available within several kms.
Here I slept on the beach, together with several local groups of weekend tourists. The following day I swam to the Martsalo beach, more conventionally accessible by foot passing through the stunning Martsalo Monastery, carved in the rock within a scenario closely reminiscent of Cappadocia. Few days later I was to reach by foot the "unreachable" Cape Trachili, the southernmost point of continental Crete, from where I swan again to Martsalo beach, thus completing the exploration of this unknown corner of Crete, where a 400 m high mountain plunges into the sea with vertical walls full of pictoresque caves.

If you want one really in the desert ("desert" for accessibility, not for water), then try this other, dedicated to the same saint: www.panoramio.com/photo/111458447
