Location: Paestum      by: Giuseppe Marzulli
Area: Italy      Date: August 2014
Paestum 360°.
This time we leave aside Byron and follow the footsteps of Goethe. Goethe arrived in Paestum in March 1787 and wrote in his "Italienische Reise":
« Endlich, ungewiss, ob wir durch Felsen oder Trümmer führen, konnten wir einige große länglich-viereckige Massen, die wir in der Ferne schon bemerkt hatten, als überbliebene Tempel und Denkmale einer ehemals so prächtigen Stadt unterscheiden. »

And Paestum a magnificent city it had been really.
Paestum was a major ancient Greek city on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Magna Graecia. After its foundation by Greek colonists under the name of Poseidonia, it was eventually conquered by the Lucanians and later the Romans. The Lucanians renamed it to Paistos and the Romans gave the city its current name.

The ruins of Paestum are notable for their three ancient Greek temples which are of considerable dimensions (among the greatest of all) and in a very good state of preservation. In the pano you see two temples. The third is in a different area.

The Paestum temples are a view which was to be added to this site. I am happy that a pan-master was taking up this challenging task. Very enjoyable!

How many people had to be cut out by masking ???

Very nice!

Mi interesserebbe anche sapere che cos'è quel paesone giù in fondo sulla destra.
E' ragionevole che sia già Vallo della Lucania con il monte Gelbison??

Dear Christoph, I have not had to cancel any people. Paestum is a bit far from the tourist routes and, unfortunately, Italians do not seem to be very interested in their exceptional archaeological Heritage...

Caro Alberto, il Monte Gelbison, su cui in agosto sono stato, e Vallo della Lucania sono un po' più a sud.

In the preview I thought of a mirrored view. Very nice and interisting historical site.
Kind regards, Matthias.

Hello Matthias. At first sight it may seem, but the two temples have in common only the Doric style. The period of construction and the number of columns are different. Temple of Hera is built with 18x9 columns, 14x6 that of Neptune.
The Neptun Temple is latest, from about 450 B.C. (about the same time the Parthenon in Athens was built). This temple is probably the best preserved Doric temple in the world. It is called Neptune Temple by tradition, but, in reality, it is not known exactly which god was dedicated.

Great effect as a panorama with the curves and the symmetry. Cheers, Martin

Thank you Martin. This is one of my favorite panos because, as told by Matthias, it simulates a symmetry that in reality there is absolutely no (and because it is a remarkable archaeological site).

I am overwhelmed - the wingbeats of history are refreshing and confronting. Greetings, Jan.
