We did drive this road (the Honoapiilani Highway) three or four time in our Maui week but had only once the chance to see the Haleakala summit in this mild reddish evening light. As usual a strong trade wind sea breeze was curling the water; clouds were forming around the mountain the whole day. Although hidden behind these cloud-walls during day time, the clouds recede daily to allow a spectacular sun set / star gazing and sun rise experience on the mountain top.
