The castle of Rocca Calascio is a mountaintop fortress in Abruzzo.
At an elevation of 1460 metres, the castle was the highest fortress in the Apennines.
It is believed that it was impossible to conquer, but the fortress was never tested in battle. However, it was badly damaged in1461 by an earthquake.
Rocca Calascio was the location for several scenes in many movies.

Hi Martin. I don't know if the weather was perfect. Visibility was good (though if it hadn't been, I would have gone elsewhere), but it was very hot even at those altitudes, and it was very windy at the summit.
In my opinion, the timing was perfect—around sunset.
Rocca Calascio is one of my favorite places in the Apennines, and I'm glad you visited it.

This region is gorgeous, Giuseppe - it's definitely on my bucket list for when we move further south on our next trips to Italy ... until we end up in Sicily one day ;-)

Hi Hans-Jörg. There are certainly Italian regions more beautiful than Abruzzo (as you know, I love Tuscany), but, in my opinion, Abruzzo is the most underrated in terms of tourism.

Very nice spot and landscape. In the German language there is a word called "Trutzburg" which came to my mind here. "Rocca forte" in Italian ?

Hi Hans-Jürgen. Unfortunately, I don't speak German, but I think "Trutzburg" could be translated as "Roccaforte" (without a space between *rocca* and *forte*).
