The Roman Forum (Foro Romano), also known by its Latin name Forum Romanum, is a rectangular forum (plaza) surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the centre of the city of Rome.
For centuries, the Forum was the centre of day-to-day life in Rome: the site of triumphal processions and elections; the venue for public speeches, criminal trials and gladiatorial matches; and the nucleus of commercial and legal affairs.
But it gradually fell into ruin. In past centuries (especially from the 16th to the 18th century), this area was called Campo Vaccino (Cow Field).
The area was used as a pasture for cows and sheep and was the site of a cattle market ;-)
The ancient Roman remains were almost all underground.

Comments

A very good overview, and apparently not too crowded. Cheers, Martin

In my opinion, this is the best spot to get an overview of the Roman Forum. Attached to the Roman Forum are the Imperial Fora, but those are better seen from another vantage point.

Ah, but that's not the case.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, many churches in Rome were built by reusing material from Roman temples.
And there was not only a desire to recover valuable building materials, but also to destroy what were considered symbols of paganism.
Very little was saved.

I was surprised that such a comprehensive panorama of this historic site in Rome had not been shown before - thanks for sharing, Giuseppe !!

Cheers, Hans-Jörg

Dear Hans-Jörg, it wasn't posted before because the Palatine Terrace was under renovation and renovations in Rome take biblical times ;-)

Wer weiß, was dort noch alles unter der Erde auf seine Entdeckung wartet.
