Castel del Monte (1.346 meters above sea level) is a medieval and Renaissance hill town in northern Abruzzo. Located in the heart of the Gran Sasso mountain range, the town is set into a steep hillside nestled beneath mountain peaks near the high plain of Campo Imperatore. Castel del Monte sits opposite the ancient mountaintop fortress of Rocca Calascio and faces Monte Sirente in the distance.

Comments

We made a stop there as well on the way from Monte Bolza (#30207) to Rocca Calascio, but missed this viewpoint and had clouds. Is that Sirente (#29814) in the background? Cheers, Martin

Yes, Sirente. This is one of those views you catch by chance while driving along the road. Castel del Monte is probably the most beautiful village in the Gran Sasso massif.
