Location: Monte Cola (2261 m)      by: Pedrotti Alberto
Area: Italy      Date: 26-12-2024
On 26-12-2019 I had from the home mountains the sight of the Appennino which I recorded in N.26789.
Precisely five years later I had a sight which was perhaps less comprehensive, but for the first time I felt the illusion that the bulky Monte Cimone, 218 km far, really were an Alpine summit, instead of lying beyond the Pianura Padana.
I readily threw away the pictures taken 24 hours before from the summit of the Pizzo di Levico - Cima Vezzena, since the new ones were far better.
Surprisingly, the shape of Monte Cimone accompanied me, like it actually were one of the home mountains, for half the descent to the bicycle left at 1600 m.
In those days it had become commonplace to photograph the Monviso from Pedona, on the hill above Camaiore, with the triangle of the "visible mountain" looming directly above the Isola Palmaria. But this had already been done before: what surprised me was the appearance on the web of a Monviso taken from the hills of Valle Benedetta, in the hinterland of Livorno.
The Poggio di Celso that I marked at 187.2° lies well behind the watershed, at less than 10 km from the town of Pistoia.
Similarly, the Cima di Romecchio at 197.4° is 10 km from Castelnuovo Garfagnana.
