Backing up material after the crash of my oldest external disk, I find my oldest panoramas. This one is one of the very first.
It was for me a half miracle when, at the last day in Granada, I finally found a shop willing to rent me a bicycle, such that I could tackle what the Spanish call the "carretera más alta de Europa", reaching the 3394 m of the Pico del Veleta.
Actually, at 2850 m (which means: after "only" 2200 m of climb) I had to give up the undertaking, since after the spectacular Cauchiles switchbacks the road crossed a slope which was completely covered by snow. featuring also some ski track. Having climbed extensively in the Alpi Apuane in winter, I know that is it not the case to defy the treacherous snow, completely frozen at the surface, which one finds on the mountains adjacent to the sea. Not surprisingly, at every wall in the ski resorts of Pradollano, Sierra Nevada and Hoya de la Mora hung the warning: "Extreme la precaución / ¡¡ Peligro !! / Nieve helada en la Sierra / Crampones y piolet imprescindibles". So, I avoided to walk on that snow - let alone to push a (rent) bicycle on it.
Hence, cycling to the top of the Veleta, and perhaps crossing to the fabled world of the Alpujarras through the high dirt roads of the south side, remains a dream for the future, only hinted at by this old, low-quality work.
