Very nice view over the gulf and from the beautiful area around La Spezia.

The scale of the port is, of course, appalling. Years ago, when we took the bus from La Spezia station to Portovenere, I couldn't measure that. And I could only have dreamed of such an excellent vantage point as Monte Santa Croce. And of such beautiful weather even more so.

Hi Heinz. There are many vantage points to photograph La Spezia. The city was (and still is, together with Taranto, but conditions have changed), the main Italian military naval base and was therefore surrounded by almost 20 forts or artillery positions. Many of these are no longer used. According to the military theories of the early twentieth century, all these military posts were in dominant positions and therefore are all excellent vantage points. On Monte Santa Croce there was an artillery position with five guns. Some of these cannons, obviously unusable, are still visible on the mountain.

One of my biggest omissions when living in Switzerland was that I never visited the Cinque Terre. It is hard for me to imagine how this very fine view is just a few kilometers away.
