The Tomb of Caecilia Metella (Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella) is a mausoleum located just outside Rome at the three mile marker of the Via Appia. It was built during the 1st century BC to honor Caecilia Metella who was daughter of a consul and wife of a quaestor.
The Tomb of Caecilia is one of the most well known and well preserved monuments along the Via Appia Antica.

The tomb was visited by Goethe in 1786. Goethe wanted to be portrayed in a famous painting with this tomb in the background.

Very cool clouds in the sky - perhaps an artifact of the panoramic projection... Did Goethe ride a Vespa or Roller at the time when he travelled here?

I did not know the building, although it should be known. But I work only about 1km away from the painting. Googling from Tischbein to Cecilia Metella is then not that hard. Cheers, Martin

Jokes apart, it is a famous painting.
The round tower in the background in the center of the painting is that of this building (to the left), as it was in the days of Goethe.

I can add that the Via Appia Antica is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful places in Rome. It's a long way to go, but it's worth it.
