Pulsano Abbey (Abbazia di Santa Maria di Pulsano) is a special and almost unknown place.
The Abbey (visible on the right) is interesting and pleasing to see. His position does not need comments.
But the most interesting thing is the hermitages.
In the overhanging rocks, both on the right and on the left, but further down, there are 24 hermitages, where hermit monks lived, in shelters carved into the rock.
Often the hermits could not access their cell except through ladders or ropes tied pulley.
To reach the hermitages it is necessary to follow difficult paths and only a few are easily recognizable.
In the pano I could not recognize any hermitage (the ones I saw were lower), but I do not exclude that those who are experts of the place can recognize someone.
The place has been abandoned for many centuries and has often been the subject of vandalism.
The historical importance of this site has been rediscovered only a few years ago. I hope it will be adequately protected, but, in my opinion, he is not given the attention it deserves.

Thank you for sharing! We decided to postpone a visit to a more decent travel month than late August ....

You are an experienced traveler. August is not the best month to visit those places, but sometimes you can not choose other dates....
If you go there, I advise you to photograph the "trabucchi". What is a "trabucco"? You will discover it by visiting the coast north of Vieste.
Among the towns in the area, my favorite is Peschici.

I don't know if the blue color is real but it seems quite typical for the Golfo di Manfredonia on your panos.

when we drove home I had the possibility - now knowing where to look - to look at the Abbazia from Manfredonia. It is impressive how it clings to the rocks and it must have been a very interesting and impressive sight in medieval times. This part of Gargano is indeed very, very special.

Some days, after work, I dream of such a hermitage. Only I am not at all a friend of ropes and ladders. So I rather enjoy the view offered here on the computer... Cheers, Martin

Martin, I can reassure you ;-)
One like you could easily enter the hermit without the help of ropes and ladders.
