Mahabalipuram or Mamallapuram is a wonderful place for various reasons: there are a couple of world heritage monuments there, like the monolithic 5 Rathas or the shore temple both from about 800 AD. The beach is beautiful, the water pleasantly warm and it is still a fairly small and remote fishing village.
