Im Süden der italienischen Region Marken, an der Grenze zu Umbrien, weist der Gebirgszug der Apenninen einen alpinen Charakter auf. Die bis fast 2500 m hohen Monti Si­billini (Berge der Sibyllen) mit ihren Schluch­ten, markanten Felsgipfeln, kahlen Hängen und weiten Hochebenen bilden ohne Zweifel den landschaftlichen Höhepunkt der Marken.
