Avio castle (known as Castello di Avio or Castello di Sabbionara) is one of the most ancient and suggestive fortified monuments in Trentino and it is found to the south of Trentino and a short distance east of Lake Garda.
Passing along the valley of the Adige River there are numerous castles, dating from the time when the valley played an important defensive role and was also an important transit route. This strategic importance dates back to before the ancient Romans and extends through to medieval times.
Many of the ancient castles along the valley are hard to access, but Castello di Avio is accessible, open to the public (only in some periods) and has good views over the Val Lagarina.

Castle Avio I recognize the the keep (Mastio) and the Tower of Picadora (Torre della Picadora).
The keep was the last line of defense of the castle. The Tower of Picadora was the place where were hanged enemies of Castelbarco (the Lords of the castle.) Once connected to the rope were left dangling from the top of the tower so that everyone could see them and functioned as a warning to the population.
The Middle Ages was not a quiet time around here...
