Taranto was the only major cities of Magna Graecia founded by Sparta and not Athens. Today it is a city in severe crisis and with a high rate of pollution. It is, however, in a very nice location.
Mar Piccolo (Little Sea) is a kind of lagoon within the city.

Hi Giuseppe. In the water, under the chimneys and further right - what is that? KR Jan.

Hello Jan. They are the buoys that mark the mussel farms. Once the mussels of Taranto were famous in whole of Italy for their flavor. Now it is forbidden to sell.

Very interesting portrait. So what do they do with the mussels? Or is "forbidden" just a formality that can be circumvented? Cheers, Martin

Hello Martin. How are things with precision I do not know.
Taranto is site of a large iron and steel industry (you can see the smokestacks in the background) that is accused of having polluted the air and the sea. Seem to have found in mussels percentage of dioxin higher than the allowable limit.
In Italy these things are always difficult to assess because we unfortunately tends to tackle problems from the ideological point of view and not rationally.
