Lussino - Losinj and Cherso - Cres are two islands (Apsyrtides for the ancient Greeks), or better an unique island which has been separated by an artificial channel excavated already in the Bronze Age. From a practical point of view, they remain united for 22 hours out of 24, except for the two times, at 9:00 and at 17:00, when the rotating bridge at Osor (built by an Italian company) is opened, to allow the crossing of boats.
Main town on Cres and Cres, and main town on Losinj is Losinj: up to here, everything easy and intuitive.
Losinj is subdivided in Veli Losinj (Lussingrande or "big Losinj") and Mali Losinj (Lussinpiccolo or "small Losinj". And here comes the counterintuitive part, because Mali Losinj is far more important, being also the main harbour, with lines to Zadar, Pola-Venezia and Ravenna. Its bay is very long (at least twice the bay of Cres), and extends well beyond the scope of the present panorama. Waiting on the SW bank, I was blessed for a moment by the late ray depicted here. Soon after completing this series of nine shots, I rushed up the long system of stairs to reach a suitable panoramic spot in the vicinity of the cathedral, but alas there is no such spot.
Instead of collecting a sunset panorama, I got in contact with the Italian community of Lussino, which had gathered for the Saturday evening mass, which is held in Italian. To my surprise, I could speak with them not only in Italian, but even in my own "veneto" dialect. Even more susprisingly, some of them spoke that dialect, but with a strange accent reminiscent of other parts of Italy.
Asking why, I learnt that some of them were born in a camp near Rome, after their families had escaped from Lussino at the time of Tito.
And here we come to stories which are more recent and less pleasant than the Venetian splendour that the present sight of Lussinpiccolo aims to display.
If the story of every place is complex, that of these particular places is far more complex than usual.
