SOLVED RIDDLE.

Fornovo di Taro is a comune in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about 100 kilometres west of Bologna. The town lies on the east bank of the Taro River.
It is especially remembered as the seat of the Battle of Fornovo, fought in 1495 between the Italian league and the French troops of Charles VIII.

First idea is the Tagliamento, but the stones could be a bit whiter there.

Given you recent travel history, I was looking around the Magra, but not yet successful. Cheers, Martin

Thanks for the comments. With rivers it is always more difficult because the view changes if they are full or not.
A battle was fought on the banks of this river some centuries ago, more or less at this point. The battle is famous in Italy, but probably unknown abroad.

The river is a tributary of the Po, on the side of the Apennines.
If there is no other intervention, tonight I will give the solution

"Some centuries" can mean a lot. :-)

If we talk about some 22 centuries, the river could be the Panaro (or "Scultenna", as they used to say then.)

More likely might be the Trebbia with battles between Hannibal and the Romans and another one in the Coalition Wars (which should not be THAT important for the Italian soul).

Ciao Arne. The Trebbia river is not very far away, but it is not Trebbia. The year of the battle is 1495.
The battle had a modest military importance, but for Italy it had tragic consequences, because it marked the beginning of the end of the independence of the states in which it was divided.

Oh, the Taro.

I would not have known that.

After all, it is a shame: Italy, the country, that leads Europe into a new cultural era, is not able to defend itself, although geography seems to be on Italy's side.

And at the same time the world changes and Europe starts its journey towards the west...

I agree. For some centuries, until that time, Italy was the richest and most important country in Europe.
Then two things happened: the first is the discovery of America, which greatly diminished the importance of the Mediterranean Sea and favored the European nations that faced the Atlantic or the northern seas.
The second is that the battle of Fornovo made everyone understand the political weakness of Italy, which became a land of conquest for other European nations.

Once more great educational value. I had scanned the area, but for some reason missed this point. Could you please locate the pano with coordinates as well? Cheers, Martin
