I guess, it can be twenty miles before the border

First I thought - palms - this is Calabria. Then I realized the glass houses. So "San Remo" area. You are standing on a gravel bar of the river mouth in XXmiglia.

Well Herwig and Christoph.
Perhaps the most particular aspect of the pano is to see palms and the Alps at the same time.
I think Herwig's was just a joke, but I would also like to point out that the border is not twenty miles away, but only 6 kilometers, that is just over three miles.
Ventimiglia means literally twenty miles, but has a different etymology.
The precise location of the pano point can be seen in the pano 20688.

I was wondering how long is an Italian mile... Just remembering the value of the Italian Pound prior to its conversion to Euro? (:-).

This pano has wonderful light & colours, especially in the left half!

I was wondering if it would benefit from shortening it by cropping on the right end - which to me seems less interesting (apart from the photographer's shadow).

@Augustin: I agree. Let's say I wanted to take a selfie ;-)

I only know this town by night because of its train station. I think it is a main railway point for travelling by train to Côte d'Azur.
(For me it looks like the pano falls to the right at the end?)

Ventimiglia is the last Italian train station before the French border.
But, historically, the area of Nice (Nizza) was of Italian language and culture and the border reached the Var river. For example, if I'm not wrong, in German, is still used today the Italian name of the city, Nizza.
For the right of the pano, you are probably right.
