The seat of the Papacy has not always been Rome. For 68 years, from 1309 to 1377, the residence of the Popes was in Avignon (Southern France). This Gothic palace was their seat.
The Papal Palace (Palais des papes) in Avignon is probably the largest medieval Gothic building.

Hello Arno. I included the technical details. I would add that a close pano of the Palais des Papes is difficult to achieve for many reasons. The main one is that the square in front of the Palace is very close and it is always very crowded. Probably the pano is not perfect, but it makes well the charm and the ambience of the place (which is always my main focus).
@Alberto: secondo me, preferirebbe trasferire lì i suoi cardinali e rimanere lui a Roma ;-)
