Going to Maui means not only to snorkel in a tropical paradise or to take and survive the road to Hana (which is by the way quite harmless ...), but of course also to go up the volcano. You can certainly hike up there, you can go and see some siverswords in bloom (if you are lucky) and you can be quite sure to see a stunning sunrise or sunset if you can make it in time.

Go to see a sunrise and you can be sure to be among hundreds of other tourists eagerly waiting in the cold night for the sun to rise. All of this after you queued up the winding mountain road between drivers hopefully never coming across myself in a more alpine environment - you can be sure, that you will meet them again on the way down...

Consequently we took the chance to see a sunset from the mountain top. We were almost alone, sat down for a while in the warm afternoon sun, watched the trade winds piling up the clouds around the mountain and could not let loose from this view almost into complete darkness.
