The village of Piazze lies on the top of an isolated hill dominating the two lakes of Piné: Lago di Serraia and Lago delle Piazze.
When, last year, I visited the place for the first time, I wondered how I could have always skipped it before. After all, it lies at less than 40 km from my home.
As often happens after an extremely delayed first visit, the second one came very quickly. Precisely one month later (18-03), I would pass again through Piazze, this time carrying a load of illustrated books for children. written in Russian, for a family of Ukraininan friends which was being temporarily hosted by my sister.
And when, later on, the hospitality of refugees was organized, that family was moved... precisely to Piazze.
In that first visit I had photographed the cemetery because this hill strangely mixes burials of local people killed in a 1855 cholera epidemic, with more exotic ones, such as those of Napoleonic soldiers who fell here in some battles of 1796.
For me it is surprising to think how an isolated and idyllic spot like this can be touched by illness and war, as much as any other one, maybe less isolated and idyllic.

Comments

Unfortunately more commonplace than one would think, I guess. It is surprising how for example the plagues of the middle ages came out in nearly every single village in Europe. I think it has been estimated that 30% of the european population died then.

Impressive addition to the sparse series of cemeteries on this site. Cheers, Martin
