Originally gouffres were huge cathedral-like caves. Now they are open to the sky at the top. Once the Gouffre de l'Œil Doux (or "the Soft-eyed Chasm") was one of those caves. Millions of years ago above and underground erosion made the roof of the cave collapse. It is truly one of nature's wonders. A small 30 meter deep fresh water lake was created when the roof of the cave collapsed. The water apparently comes from the Massif de la Clape's underground rivers. From the top of the l'Œil Doux cliffs a vast panorama of the Massif, the lagoons and the Mediterranean Sea can been seen.
This astonishing natural site is currently protected. Some stories say that on the bottom of the lake several wrecks of Ferrari's, Maserati's and Mercedes Benz's are "parked".
