A very short (23 hours total in Helsinki ...) business trip brought me to Finnlands capital. Luckily weather stabilized in the evening and owing to the norther summer light I vould get up early to stroll through the quiet city. At Tervasaari I was able to catch the first rays of sun, a fog bank to the north east made sunrise light not that beautiful as you can see here. Still some of the ships are not fully exposed to the sun.

We look at the north face of Katajanokka, a quater of Helsinki domineted by housing areas of the lathe 19th century. On the righthand side Uspenskin katedraali, the orthodox main church of the town is to be seen, the cental part is dominated by the Finish ice-breaker fleet. The island to the left is Hylkysaari ("wreck island") with the Maritime Museum located in the former pilot station. Quote "During summer, you can get to Hylkysaari by ferry from the Market Square and in winter you might just be able to walk across the ice"

Coming back to ice: The icebreaker polaris you see so prominently is the latest ship of the fleet. It was constructed in 2016 and (so I was lucky) brought to Katajanokka piers of 12-06-2017 as told in http://arctia.fi/en/2017/06/21/summer-brought-polaris-katajanokka/

I do not keep on telling you why Polaris is such a wounderful ship, how the fleet is organized, and how long ice-breaking season lasts in Finland (this year until the end of May) - go and see yourself on wiki, on arctica.fi etc.)

Danke für den Hinweis. Ich habe versucht es zu verbessern. Für ein "in die Tiefe gehende" Korrektur (Kontrollpunkt-Verteilung auf der linken Seite ...) habe ich im Moment leider keine Zeit.

Sorrry ..

Hi Christoph.
I still have beautiful memories of Finland, particularly Tampere/Turku, Helsinki and Savonlinna which I visited in remote 1984... A youth journey! Or better an Odyssey: two days and a half by train from Venice across Germany, Denmark and Sweden to go, two days and a half to come back... Thanks for your panos that give me fresh memories of old times!!!

Ciao, Alvise
