The Conciergerie is a famous historic building in Paris, situated in the northern part of the Île de la Cité, not far from Notre-Dame. This is what currently remains of the Palais de la Cité, the residence of the kings of France from the X to the XIV century.
But his fame is linked especially in the period of the French Revolution, when it was called the "antechamber of the guillotine".
During the Terror, the bloodiest phase of the French Revolution, in the building was displaced the seat of the Court of Revolutionaries. It was also the prison where they were imprisoned suspected of counter-revolutionary crimes. The most famous prisoner locked up here was the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, who was condemned and guillotined.
