The site is a former bauxite quarry (bauxite is the ore from which aluminum is extracted) that remained active until 1976, the year it was permanently closed. The small lake formed spontaneously when the excavations reached the water table.
It is famous for the striking color contrast between the red earth (bauxite rock) and the emerald-green water of the lake.
The lighting conditions at the time of my visit were not ideal, but the place is very beautiful, and I was unable to visit at any other time.
Naturally, given its origins, swimming here is strongly discouraged ;-)
