Otranto is the easternmost municipality in Italy.
The Strait of Otranto, to which the town gives its name, connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea and separates Italy from Albania. Today it is a small town that thrives on tourism and fishing, but historically it was quite important. Otranto is the setting for Horace Walpole's famous novel "The Castle of Otranto", which is generally considered the first example of a Gothic novel.
