Those who are used to walking at high altitudes in the Alps are used to seeing the altitude limit of the trees made up of conifers (firs, pines, larches).

But in the Apennines this is not the case. In the Apennines, the altitude limit of the trees is generally made up of beech trees.

The trees seen in this pano are almost all beeches. But if you are careful, you can also see some very small areas where there are fir trees.

In the northern Apennines the altitude limit of the beech trees corresponds to an altitude that varies, depending on the area, from 1600 to 1800 meters.

In the period that usually goes from the second half of October to the beginning of November, the beech trees are beautifully colored.

Großartige Herbstlandschaft. Eigentlich finde ich das rotbraun der Buchen im Spätherbst nicht so attraktiv, aber hier kommt das richtig gut rüber.

Dieter

I know and love these beech forests, but so far I have missed the perfect moment that you show here. In 2018 in Basilicata, we were too late. This year in Abruzzo, we were too early. But this shows you find them across the Apennine from North to South. Cheers, Martin
