Nach dem außerordentlich erfüllten Tag an der messenischen Küste mit Strand, Sonne und Meer, aber wie demonstriert auch etlichen Burgen war es mit den messenischen Mauern noch nicht zu Ende. Am Tag vor dem Rückflug (und nun bestätigt zwei Tage vor dem kompletten Lockdown) stand eine längere Autofahrt an, bei der sich die Ausgrabungen des antiken Messene als Zwischenstop aufdrängten. Nach der Besichtigung des alten Zentrums (Pano folgt, bietet aber weder Burg noch Mauer) und des kleinen Museums zog es mich noch an die Stadtmauer. Ehemals 9km lang zeigt diese die Größe der antiken Stadt auf. Über dieser thront der Berg Ithomi mit seinem Kloster. Natürlich ließ ich die Besteigung nicht aus; allerdings hatte es bis zur Ankunft am Gipfel zugezogen, so daß es kein Licht für ein Pano mehr gab.

After the extraordinarily fulfilling day on the Messenian coast with beach, sun and sea, but as demonstrated also several castles, it was not yet over with the Messenian walls. On the day before the return flight (and now confirmed two days before the complete lockdown), a longer car trip was due, during which the excavations of ancient Messene were an obvious stopover. After visiting the old centre (pano follows, but offers neither castle nor wall) and the small museum, I was drawn to the city wall. Formerly 9km long, it shows the size of the ancient city. Above it towers Mount Ithomi with its monastery. Of course, I didn't miss the ascent; however, by the time I reached the summit, it had clouded over, so there was no light for a pano.
