Location: Cava Portoro      by: Giuseppe Marzulli
Area: Italy      Date: 31 August 2020
Portoro or Portovenere marble is a precious and rare variety of black marble from the western area of the Gulf of La Spezia.
The quarry area can be reached by taking the road that connects the town of La Spezia with the promontory of Portovenere and then following the roads that climb the slopes of the Castellana, Santa Croce or Muzzerone mountains.
These are delicate areas from a landscape and naturalistic point of view and therefore the cultivation of the quarries must be carried out with particular attention: the current number of these quarries is very limited.
From the quarry where I am it is possible to see well the areas of the bay of Le Grazie.
