The famous Sun Temple in Konark was constructed around 1250 A.D. and was the centre of Hindu worship for many centuries. After destruction from the Muslim conquerors it was deserted and almost completely overgrown. The Brits rediscovered this impressive monument in the 19th century and started rebuilding and preserving it. Now it is a world heritage monument and well taken care of by the Indian government.
