Nach so vielen Ausblicken zum Taygetos wollte ich natürlich auch nochmal rauf. Mit Genuss wiederholte ich die Wanderung vom November 2016 zum höchsten Gipfel, dem Profitis Ilias (wie soll er auch sonst heissen?), in ganz anderem Wetter - damals war ich hier oben in der Suppe und auf dem Rest des Weges bis zum Gipfel lag etwas Neuschnee.

Von Paleopanagia führt ein geteertes Sträßchen bis auf ca. 970m Höhe. Von dort könnte man auf einem Fahrweg noch bis zur Hütte auf 1550m weiterfahren, aber der Fußweg durch den Wald ist auch wunderschön. An der Hütte war viel los - am Wochenende hatten einige Griechen und ein paar Israelis, mit denen ich nach dem Abstieg noch ins Gespräch kam, dort übernachtet. Der weitere Weg ist hervorragend gebaut, durchwegs gut markiert und im Gelände über felsigere Stufen und Bänder und durch Wiesen sehr abwechslungsreich. An der Scharte von "Portes" trifft man auf den Grat und die Sicht weitet sich. Am Gipfel hatte sich allerdings schon ein kleines Wölkchen festgemacht. Und auf der anderen Seite lockte mich schon der Hang hinauf zum Athanati Rachi als mögliche Nachspeise.

After so many views of the Taygetos, I obviously wanted to go up there again. I enjoyed repeating the November 2016 hike to the highest peak, Profitis Ilias (what else should it be called?), in completely different weather - back then I was up here in the mist and there was some fresh snow on the rest of the way to the summit.

From Paleopanagia, a small tarred road leads up to an altitude of about 970m. From there you could continue on a dirt track to the hut at 1550m, but the footpath through the forest is also beautiful. There was a lot going on at the hut - at the weekend a number of Greeks and a few Israelis, with whom I got into conversation after the descent, had spent the night there. The rest of the trail is excellently built, well marked throughout and very varied in terrain over rocky steps and ribbons and through meadows. At the saddle of "Portes" one meets the ridge and the view widens. At the summit, however, a small cloud had already attached itself. And on the other side, the slope up to Athanati Rachi was already tempting me as a possible dessert.
