You show me each time, that I know almost nothing about Italy ... I hope it's Italy ;-) ... !!!

I showed the riddle to my wife. She said „Das ist in den Abruzzen“

Always trust your wife! So it was an easy task to finalise her first guess.

We see a city which is north of Pescara and was successfully defended against a Bonaparte by an Irishman. Did I say enough?

@ Hans-Jörg: If one is willing to tolerate Italian flaws, for artistic wealth and variety of landscapes Italy has few rivals.
The problem is that not everyone is willing to tolerate Italian flaws ;-)

@Christoph: your wife is absolutely right. From the historical point of view, the town is famous for the episode you mentioned, but for the Italians also for another reason.
A fortress extends over the entire surface of the top of the hill.

I am happy to hear that we were right. I am curious which of the many episodes in the rich history of this place has - in your view - nationwide importance for Italy. I have two favourites.

L'associazione mentale sarà strampalata, ma come composizione (fianco della montagna che scompare dietro collina fortificata) mi fa venire in mente questa mia foto dall'altra parte dell'Adriatico:

@Christoph: in 1860 Garibaldi landed in Sicily, with just over a thousand men. He had to face the Bourbon army of Naples, which had a hundred thousand soldiers. For a long series of reasons the thousand Garibaldini defeated the Bourbon army, a hundred times more numerous. The Bourbon army of Naples was generally corrupt and inefficient.
However, some soldiers of the Bourbon army were very motivated and organized their last resistance in this fortress.
The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed March 17, 1861. When it was proclaimed the Fortress of Civitella del Tronto was still in possession of the Bourbon soldiers.
For me, the Fortress of Civitella del Tronto is a symbol of someone who bravely (or perhaps stupidly) defends the wrong cause.

Dear Giuseppe

The Garibaldi-Story was also one of my favorites. However the other one is a bit "darker" and takes place in the middle of the 20th century ...

However, I must go there one time, I have to visit this mountain. Why? Because this fortress was three times under siege and was hold "over time" by its inhabitants.

I hope I got everything right ...

1556/57 François de Guise (France) was kept up from proceeding further south Kingdom Naples / Sicily; Spanish Habsburger .. ...) until he had to give up the campaign.

1806 the fortress withstood Joseph Bonaparte (France // as King of Naples and Sicily (1806–1808; Giuseppe I) until Naples (under Spanish-Bourbon flag...) capitulated ...

1861 (under Spansh-Bourbon flag ...) withstood Garibaldi until all was over (capitulation of Messina ...).

Hence an interesting place ..
