In the Garhwal area of the Himalayas many rivers are forming the big stream of the Ganga. The major ones are considered gods in their own right with very different characters. The confluences of two of these rivers are called prayag and the five major prayags are particularly sacred locations. Karnprayag is the meeting of Pindar (right side), originating from the huge Pindari glacier and Alaknanda coming from Badrinath. On the exact meeting points of the rivers there is a bathing ghat, were pilgrims may feel the different energies from the rivers by stepping from left to right and back. Around the ghats and temples small towns have been sqeezed into the narrow valleys, where the busy traffic often gets stuck.
