Gebiet: Bolivia      Datum: 22-08-2009
Sajama (6542) is the highest among the 14 Bolivian 6000m summits. It is the also highest peak of the Andes between Yerupaja, 1200 km north (Peru), and Llullaillaco, 800 km south (Argentina/Chile). In the overall, it ranks as the 15th Andine peak.
If you look inside the second half of the album picasaweb.google.com/albertopedrotti/Bolivia you will found plenty of photos of this mountain, both from below and from the summit. I have no summit panorama but, looking at the single images, you will soon realize why: the flat "rest of the world" lies simply too far down and, in addition, the immensity of the snow dome heavily restricts the possibilities. This also explains why one day somebody had the idea to turn these high snowfields into a football pitch, in order to play what seems to have been the highest match ever played.
The work that I present here has no particular pretension, except that of answering the complaint, raised in N.16792, about the lack of Sajama-panoramas.
The verses
El Sajama es el trono sublime
do se asienta la hermosa deidad,
la que vino radiante del cielo
coronada de luz y libertad.
belong to a "Himno a Oruro."
Who gives a Betrachtung to the Picasa images will find (photo marked 163) the first verse written on a stone along the path to the base camp, located in the wonderful valley of Aychuta.

What a giant! You've mentioned the football match that was played in the world's highest altitude ever. Seems to be a good place for Catenaccio tactics ;-).
Kind regards, Matthias.

What a mountain !!

Matthias: Catenaccio seems indeed wise... As for Contropiede - the other staple of classical Italian tactics - I do not know how quick and effective it may be at this height.

P.S.: there is actually a certain amount of Italy on the Sajama. Namely, the first ascent was carried out in 1939 by an expedition led by Piero Ghiglione, the same who climbed the Golden Throne (7275) in Karakorum. With him was the Austrian Joseph Prem, the man who had already attempted the climb three times, the first having been in 1927. On the summit they had to lay down in order not to be swept away by the wind.

@Alberto
The Italian word or term 'Contropiede' is more or less unknown in Germany. 'Konterfußball' might be a good translation for it.
Actually, we do not know much about the match. I've found just a little information in a BBC report. Attendance numbers and the final score remain a mystery till now!
Kind regards, Matthias.

A fantastic mountain.

On some web page I read that the final result was 3-3 - six goals which came after an eight-hour ascent. Looking at the image, one does not see that many supporters:

Maybe the ticket was too expensive??
In any case, I already imagine the nice kids down at the village
picasaweb.google.com/albertopedrotti/Bolivia#5376806290072572050
seeing with pleasure precious balls falling from heaven at regular intervals - at least when the goals in the door of the photo were scored!
Fore the sake of ball conservation, I guess that another location, not very far, would have been a better choice:

Thanks for the additional info. Parinacota crater has more stadium attitude whereas the football field at the summit of Nevado Sajama looks like a 'Bolzplatz' ;-).
Kind regards, Matthias.
