The Great Wall close to Badaling (Beijing municipality) is one of the most visited sections. It was restored in the 60s and opened for tourists. At the end of the totally crowded out restored part a guard is positioned. We managed to be there at 6 am when the officer was still asleep and climbed down to the old sector (what is strictly illegal) that was in original untouched state. There we could hike for about 5 hours without seeing anybody other than ourselves....
