Sunrise American style! Because of the phantastic viewing conditions there is an observatory right on top of this volcanic mountain and you can drive up all the way from sea level in about 2 hours. Every morning there is a huge crowd of tourists at the visitors center, which is about 40m below the top. Once you climb on one of the small surrounding hills, however, you can enjoy the the spectacular morning mood more quietly. Haleakala is not active right now, but you can see various cones on the slopes where once lava was flowing. On this morning the plains and the pacific ocean are covered by fog. Only the two biggest volcanoes of the Big Island, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa are visible above the dense humidity.
