So one day many of these mountains will be gone: cut into pieces of marble.

I think that marble extraction in the Apuan should be regulated much more severely, almost forbidden.
But it should be noted that in this area the marble has been extracted from far away epochs, even during the iron age. And, for exemple, many buildings of ancient Rome were built with Carrara marble. Michelangelo came here personally to choose the marble for his works.
However, other Apuane areas are intact, almost wild.

Comunque:
1) finalmente c'è una bella carta al 25.000 di queste montagne, la casa editrice si chiama 4land. Lo dico guardando, nella foto, a un vallone sotto il Sagro dove mi arrischia a sera dando fiducia a un sentiero segnato sulla vecchia Mapgraphic, e in realtà inventato di sana pianta;

It may be fun to note that to our day the president of "Carrara Marble" is Bakr Bin Laden, stepbrother of the most famous Osama ;-)

Surprising to see the marble quarries that far up the slopes. And thanks to Alberto for the links - but is it right that there still is no online topographic map of all of Italy (like in France, Norway or Switzerland)? Cheers, Martin
