Towering over Florence, the 95 mt. hight Tower of Palazzo Vecchio (also known as Arnolfo Tower) is one of the city's unmistakable symbols and focal points. It is also one of the oldest parts of the building built between 1299 and the early 14th century, probably to a design by Arnolfo di Cambio, as the seat of the city's governament.
The Tower is easily visible from Piazzale Michelangelo (pano 14318).
As a curiosity, I can say that the clock mechanism of the Tower was made by Bavarian clockmaker Georg Ledel in 1667and it is still working.
During all these centuries the Tower has always been closed to the public, but from September 2012 it is possible to climb on.
The view from the top is perhaps the most beautiful over Florence, but it is not easy to take pictures, because you can not get too close the railings.

View and light are magnificent, also perfect in a technical sense.
